Borderland Produce Rescue
Feb. 20, 2019 6:45 a.m.
All of the produce distributed by Borderlands has been rescued before it could be sent to area landfills. In 1994 we first realized that any produce not purchased by retailers, from produce distributors, was just dumped in the landfill as it is too costly for distributors to transport back to the growers. Witnessing this waste first hand helped form the beginnings of what is now Borderlands. For over 23 years Borderlands has been educating the produce industry, that it does not have the right to dump fresh produce. Being based out of Nogales, Arizona, just miles from the port of Entry responsible for over 60% of produce consumed in North America, affords Borderlands with the opportunity to rescue millions of pounds of unsold produce every year.
Each day we gets calls from area distributors with produce available for donation. Borderlands' trucks make the daily trip of picking up and unloading thousands of pounds of fresh produce. Once at the Borderlands warehouse all produce is organized for distribution through one of many Borderlands programs. Organizations are encouraged to stop by our Nogales, Arizona warehouse on Mondays to pick up fresh produce for their and their clients use. Tuesday through Friday, locals are encouraged to stop by the warehouse to shop for fresh produce. Every year, through our Produce on Wheels With-Out Waste (P.O.W.W.O.W) pop-up markets program we distribute over 6 million pounds of fresh produce to anyone (70lbs for $12) at these markets around Arizona.

Open Arms Home for Children - South Africa
Mar. 20, 2019 6:45 a.m.
We are committed to raising the children in our care to adulthood. Our model is to place 6-8 children in cottages with a permanent house mother or father. The children go to pre-school on our property and elementary, high school and college in the larger community. We aim to serve the whole child: developmentally, physically and spiritually. We are a human service organization. As such, our children are served regardless of background, race, economic status or religion. Likewise, our donors come from all faiths and backgrounds, united in simple service to children in need. God has blessed this project since its inception with caring donors, staff |

These programs are designed not only for incoming club officers (PEs, secretaries, treasurers and Rotary Foundation chairs), but for all Rotarians interested in learning more about Rotary, service projects, public image, and more. They also provide an excellent opportunity to meet fellow Rotarians throughout the district and to learn what their clubs are doing. The cost per person is $12, however, if four or more members participate from your club, the per member cost will be $10.00. This training will have breakout sessions for current and incoming club secretaries and treasurers, as well as a session near and dear to all Rotarians, everything you need to know regarding selling and serving alcohol at club fundraisers and events. Deputy City Attorney Rodney Short has volunteered to discuss the insurance requirements for these functions, and we hope to have Arizona Department of Liquor Inspector Mike Sanchez to provide information regarding special event liquor licenses and the rules that must be followed to comply with the Department's rules & regulations.
This training is open to all Rotarians, but will be especially helpful for club members that are interested in taking on leadership responsibilities as club chairs and/or officers. I highly encourage you all to attend this assembly. Here’s the District 5500 web page (https://www.rotaryd5500.org/) to register, the sooner, the better, so that we can get a reliable count of those wanting to participate in this training.
